Rugby

Stanley Primary School is renowned nationwide for its excellent standard of rugby and there is a very strong fixture list. A significant number of our boys and girls play for Teddington and some go on to play for Middlesex.

Our teams usually enter the borough mixed tag festival, the London Scottish festival and the Harlequins Cup. The 1st team have reached the National Finals for the past four years and have won it for three consecutive years.

We are fortunate enough to have Paul Burke to coach the 1st team squad. Paul has coached the London Youth Games Teams for the past 10 years and has also coached Middlesex and London Irish squads. In the four years that Paul has coached at Stanley, the rugby union teams have won the following:

  • Borough tournament (twice)
  • London North tournament (twice)
  • Surrey Cup
  • London Scottish Cup
  • Harlequins Cup (three times)
  • London Youth Games
  • National Tag to Twickenham (an unprecedented three times)

We welcome London Scottish FC's Dave Sims during curriculum time, in addition to the coaching from Mr James Watson. Tom Foster (Twickenham RFU) also helps with our after- school club.

Current and former Internationals and rugby professionals have visited the school to deliver coaching sessions to the boys. Visitors have included: former South African world cup winners Joost van der Westhuizen, AJ Ventner, former Lions player Ollie Smith, Worcester’s James Percival and Harlequins’ Will Collier.

The school has strong links with the RFU-Mr Watson was part of the School Solutions programme which helped rewrite the Schemes of Work which are currently on the RFU website. The school also has good links with Harlequins and has delivered the Premiership Rugby programme sponsored by Aviva.

Pupils who have been part of the three National winning squads have been fortunate enough to play at Twickenham and be guard of honour for internationals involving England, Australia and Wales. They have even had the pleasure of meeting England coach Stuart Lancaster who came into the changing room and gave a motivational speech prior to the children playing in front of a 100,000 crowd. The pupils also met England’s world cup winning captain Martin Johnson and England players Mark Cueto and Chris Ashton.

We also provide rugby league coaching and have very good links with London Broncos, Richmond Warriors and enter the London Broncos Primary Tag Rugby League festival.
